Pongal Celebrations in UPM
Written by Praveen Reginald on February 2, 2008 – 1:35 pmPongal is one celebration celebrated grandly in UPM year in year out. As the matter of fact, it’s the one time of the year where one would witness Indian students burning the midnight oil in their plans to plan, design and coordinate the whole event. Danau Pongal is the much awaited event and is based on a competition between residential colleges in UPM to battle out in various areas on a specific theme selected annually.
This year around the theme revolved around the main theme of " Traditional Dance Forms” and specific themes assigned to colleges included “ Kuchipudi, Bommalattam and Karakattam”. The key activity that would focus on the theme would be the development of the traditional tent-like set up or “panthals” by residential colleges that would incorporate all elements related to the specific theme assigned.
As the Danau pongal event generally takes place on a Saturday morning, students would be awake the whole night rushing out to set up their structures on a huge field with all their decos intact. The next morning would witness many students with black circles and sleepy faces but yet with gargantuan spirits to uphold the integrity of their colleges.
