DSLR Photography and Indians…

Written by Jay Yajiv on September 2, 2008 – 1:45 pm

Photography does not rank high on the list of hobbies for the average Malaysianindians?. Indians are not averse to photography, as can be attested to by any visit to a traditional Indian home, the walls are typically draped with large, elaborately framed family pictures. However, most Indians rely on studios and professional photographers to take formal pictures. For major occasions such as weddings, photographers are hired to record the proceedings. Why?

The question..
1. Are they lazy to snap pictures?
2. Expensive ‘Gadgets’?
3. Unaware of the photography world?
4. Shy to carry the around the equipment or snap infront of crowds
?

It even worst, When comes to photography and videography, Its not possible for us to carry so many gadgets travelling around. Most of the point and shoot cameras have video mode which enable you to shoot short movies but you can’t do the same with an DSLR camera (profesional photography). So if you are carrying an SLR, you are forced to carry another camera which can record movies. If you are like me carrying more than one lens which is already a burden, carrying one more camera is a much bigger pain.

When it comes to take photo in public places or infront of a group of people we will feel uncomfortable. This is so common when you’re 1st start to snap pictures. Even myself felt the same way until now. I did the survey with some of my indian friends. These are the option they choose, supported by their answer. (Quite funny)

Ms Amutha says:
2. Expensive ‘Gadgets’?
eh.. bcoz its expensive. ppl rather invest the money in some other stuff eg cars, computers etc

Mr Mohan says:
1. Are they lazy to snap pictures?
they dont have interest..  so they are lazy to do it

Mr Vinoth says:
3. Unaware of the photography world?
alot of people dont see photography and photos as art, to them its just another picture

Ms Devi says:
3. Unaware of the photography world?
individual perferences

Ms Punitha says:
3. Unaware of the photography world?
They just snap for fun, not as an interest. Because! most of the indians snap just for themselves..to keep it as their memories..

Mr Kavilan says:
1) not lazy, just dont have the skills
2) yep, expensive… im content wit simple shots from my camera fone
3) photography worls is just of no interest for me
4) not shy.. just dont wanna be carrying bulky equipment all around.. i only take photos on holiday trips

@mmuurrlly - D80 is about 1.2k extra from d60 with kit lens.. :) D40, D40x and D60 don’t have a built in autofocus motor, which means that using AF lenses will be difficult.

But D40/x/60 is almost like a compact camera, easy to shoot and gets great pictures off the camera. D60 should be sufficient. But if you want a better camera, D80 get my vote :)

    or…

    1. buy a second hand D40 + kit lens for about Rm1,100 to Rm1,300
    2. enjoy it while saving up for a D80
    3. sell the D40 + kit lens for about Rm1,100 to Rm1,200
    4. buy a second hand D80 for Rm1,900 to Rm2k (and use the D40 kit lens or buy a second hand 18-70mm kit lens for Rm650)
    5. buy a 50mm f1.8 lens
    6. save up summore and buy a speedlight
    7. buy a telephoto lens or super wide angle or lens of your taste
    8. sell off the kit lens and upgrade

    hope this info helps
    have fun!!

    I am a D40 user by the way..=)

In my opinion D40 is not that good. Well if you’re serious enough. Go for D60 or D80. D60 comes with 16-80mm VR2 Lens which is good enough to cover alot of aspects. D60 itself got live view mode in which it will function as point and shoot. But the problem is Photography still not famous among indians?.. :)

I went to Canon photography competition last year. Around 1.5k ppl took part in da event. The sad part is only 10-15 indians only while the rest is chinese and malays. Even chinese youngsters aged between 14 - 16 already familiarize with DSLR camera.

Beginners don’t waste your money on buying Nikon D80 unless it is cheap. I suggest Nikon D60 for beginners. No point you get a high end camera and you don’t know how it functions. Get a entry level camera and learn its functions and learn how to take photos like Rames…;)

heloo hello hello…yennapa, nikon maanadu va here?why no one talk abt canon, ahemm…hehehe…

Are they lazy to snap pictures?
-lazy to snap mean dont get snapped as well la..u want ppl to snap ur pic bt others no need to get snapped is it?SELFISH!!!

    Expensive ‘Gadgets’?
well back to the topic, why indians dun dSLR..hmm..to say its expensive, i wouldnt agree at all. covercharge rm50+ rm300 (bottle in club) for friday and saturdays, 4 weeks in a month,,u do the maths. i bet u can get a very decent dSLR with that sum d. those nalla kudimagans mite ask, why i wanna waste on sumthg dead than i can spend for leisure and enjaaaayy… so here, we can only talk about interest, rite? if money really is an issue, than its acceptable.

Shy to carry the around the equipment or snap infront of crowds?
-again, if u have the interest, u wont feel shy to do it in front of anyone. like me, i feel cool and macho when ic arry my dslr and enter a big crowd. and yea, at times, i was assumed by the crowd that im from some press..lolz..that’s malaysian indian mentality because they dont see many indians big the “big cameras”.lolz.

    Unaware of the photography world?
    - maybe can be taken into count, but dont tell me u are from some cage not to know wat is photograhpy is..i would like to change the statement to unaware of dSLR photography…all our ppl know is a point and shoot camera with zoom and some funny built in features where u can add frame and rabbit ears and ppl might think that it is the state of the art kinda techonology and stick to it.

my conclusion is, the interest and the passion must be there. raaja has it and so is rames and now i found that vijay also another good indian photographer. i know few of them whom are interested into this field bt duno where to start as well. oh come on, no one born with the ability to walk, we learned nah. and so did i and im still learning. i still bug raaja’s life about lenses and before getting my canon 400D, i was asking rames, raaja and few other photographers, did some research online..ask around the shop guys (dont trust them 100%)…if there’s a will there’s a way, rite?we cant spoon feed or force someone to do digital photographies but we can inspire and motivate those has the interest. looking forward to hear from mindsblog organising a photo gathering soon!!!

I have been taking pictures since I was 13..start with a 120mm pocket camera then Yashica Electro TL (my uncles one) then Nikon F601 then Minolta 500??? (SLR Lover) then move to Sony P51 then Sony V5 then NIKON D70s. Nothing better then a f/dSLR.

I keen the V5 in my car as you will not know when u will need a camera. And I use D70s for planned activities.

    1. Are they lazy to snap pictures?
indians have not got the trend of hobby photography

    2. Expensive ‘Gadgets’?
    Not expensive now days

    3. Unaware of the photography world?
    I guess so…

    4. Shy to carry the around the equipment or snap in front of crowds?

    I will agree…

In china when I was taking a pic of a beggar feeding a baby with food taken directly taken from the rubbish bin she shout at me and throw some of that food towards me ….I ran away …it is embarrassing…but part and parcel of photography….

But the results are great…. I have tones of pictures and it in more interesting when u share the pictures and u get good and interesting comments…. you can see my blog for some photos. To my advantage my job requires me to travel so at time I will backpack and take pictures….

Till date I have invested on a D70s, a 50mm lens, 200mm lens, 105mm MACRO lens, SB600 Flash, Flash Dome, Travel Storage external hard drive with memory card slot. I spend but it makes me happy to see the results and it is spiritually satisfying also.

Nothing is expensive is it makes u happy and satisfied.

this link got sent to me coz of how ridiculous this discussion is

first photography is a hobby for most and for many a profession

whichever way it is neither a easy hobby nor a cheap one though it has become cheaper thanks to digital cameras

to excel in it you actually need to invest time and patience in learning it

a persons interest is a personal thing - it shouldnt be because the whole world is doing it, or because theres a need to increase the number of people interested in it from one race - and why does photography need to be secularised into why theres less from one race?

why is there a need to secularise everything with indians?

so whats next why arent indians into xtreme sports, adventures, sky diving, bungee jumping????

there are a lot of malaysian indians involved in photography - most just dont publicise it neither do they claim at being great in it - plus there are thousand of indians involved in the industry

at the same time there are a lot of con artist who claim themselves to be photographers and charge people for crap photographs

if they had an ounce of honesty in themselves they wouldn’t be charging people for the autrocious photos they snap

id rather people get into photography because theyre interested in it and not for all the wrong reasons

no one needs to invest in dslrs if all they want is to take photos of their family n friends

    stop secularising indians

    [Reply]

    Amutha Reply:

The discussion may sound ridiculous to you but a worthwhile discussion for some. It’s all in how you take it. You took it that way, we are taking it this way. That’s all.

On why the arguments are revolving around Indians..
Let me put it this way. If it is a bowling association for example, the committee will be organising events on bowling - some events to spark interest of non-bowlers, some to guide beginners and maybe competition to bring out the hidden talents. We can’t question the association for not holding discussion/competition on let’s say archery. Likewise, this is a bloggers’ group dedicated to a particular group of people. Hence we have discussions revolving around Indians. Like what you said maybe next we will discuss why Indians are not interested in extreme sports. It’s still within our scope.

Nevertheless, your opinion and points on the topic is noted.

    Thank you for the feedback.

Here we are calling the Indians (since this is MIB) to gather and form a team to learn/share/exchange knowledge/teach for the benefit of the participant.

It happends in the photography world, thats how everyone improves the skills and get a deeper touch of the Photography world….not secularising indians.

    And not being political..

    psst…this is just my hobby.

I think if we want to make a outing…the moderators to make it happen. Leave it to them.

it all boils down to one’s interest, dear brothers and sisters…..

you may argue that equipment is getting cheaper. True, but please understand that it may not occur to most to spend it on something that simply does not interest them.

For those of you who are interested in photography, kudos to you for your enthusiasm. Each individual’s perception is different.

The comment by Visithra was not racist by any means, but simply pointing out some facts that had been running throughout the whole discussion.

It is not that Indians are always content with living in the same level without improvement (i.e. FSLAR camera usage, only family photos). Other communities do have such people. Like I said, at the end, it all comes down to a person’s interest.

If one is not interested in creative photography, then there is no point arguing why not and what can be done about it. Period.

The main article spoke exclusively for Indians, and one might argue that since this is MIB, fine I can ignore that.

But, I believe the comments which might have carried a bit of racial tone were:

    1) “There are Indians in photography, they just take pictures in Indian weddings and take “event pictures” try to make money but continue living with the same (FSLAR) camera for the rest of the life.”

    2) “When others ventured into creative photography to enhance their skills & business …Indian will still live in the same level… expensive, small camera, lazy, busy… good luck.”

To the commenter, why the need to stereotype? Why exclusively Indians?

hehehehe … because this is a forum that talk about Indians so I talk about Indians.

Yes there are such cases with others. But I see more among Indians, maybe because I move around Indian community and I was much sad to see there will be no Indians or 1 Indian in forums and workshops…

I said that not to insult or “kutuk” but to make things happen.

You see I have been inviting and suggesting dates/places but only that 1 or 2 responded. How can we help each other if we don’t unite and help each other?

It was said to ignite a spark….even among the MIB moderators. They should have taken the task at least to drive a session to meet and get together as the title said “DSLR Photography and Indians…”

So we talk around Indian community and how to make then more involved. Read the Q&A … it goes around knowledge, exposure and getting involved. And it all can be changed when we do thing in a group.

Shy, fear, small camera, how ppl react when you do street photography …

    And now I see a posting for a gathering…that’s a good move.

I am learning too and I am a kid in photography ….but it is part of my passion and wish to see many Indians in photography forums and workshops.

again what is there to be sad about if people are not interested in a particular hobby

yoga used to be practiced only by indians today its so popular there are more non indians practicing it than indians itself - so i guess the next topic will be why indians aren’t practising yoga anymore?

my question was why do you have to continue making everything race centric? when will you people ever learn to view everyone the same and stop isolating indians through such topics or groups - you want change but you’re still behaving otherwise

whoa..from a photography based discussion to racism? hahahah…take a chill pill folks!Anway..I always have been interested in photography.I had a old kodak easyshare compact camera and then i was using a canon compact camera.. Since i was always whinig to my gf that i need to buy a dslr someday just to try to learn how to use it she bought me one!! woooohhhhhhhhhooooooo!(there goes my bday presie for yearS!! :P )

I got a entry level canon eos 1000d which is god enough for a beginer in my view! personally i think if you are interested in learning a thing or two buy something within your means and learn how to use it properly first la!

I dont think you gonna take profesional photo’s and try to make money with ur 1st dslr! :)

    my 2 cents! :)

    Cheers guys!

It must be quite a small world when we say there are no good indian photographers, I’ve two friends who are great photographers and they’re indians but I find that race does not even factor in if one is good or not. Does that mean my circle of friends is the only odd one out in Malaysia to have a multiracial photographer meet? I believe that Malaysians are too hung up on race and political affiliations and in that process forgot all about what’s important in the process. In photography in particular I see race is no impediment in being a good photographer nor gear a matter of limitations (though I am the minority in saying this). If there are trouble finding Indians only for a photoshoot mingle around more, don’t be exclusive, mix with other Malaysians that’s my advise. So next time you see me a Chinese, with 2 indians, a south african, an iranian muslim and a malay, we are just photographers first and foremost and never be abash to be inclusive not exclusive.

Photography is a hobby , few people who are really passionate about it find the money and the time to indulge in it. For most Indians they are either too busy with life or simply cannot afford the time and money to do it.There are many brilliant Indian photographers in the industry who you can appreciate if you really belong to it,the whole topic seems to generalize issues to get some web hits.
