Why I don’t see Indians in gyms?

Written by Amutha on September 6, 2008 – 10:33 am

Its a question that I always ask myself whenever I go for work out at a nearby gymnasium. The majority are Chinese (I see equal numbers of males and females), some Malays (more males than females) and very few Indians (maybe not more than 5 at a time).

While I agree gyms’ charges are kind of high, the centres come with good equipments, various different studios and even professionals watching over you. Its a money-worth-spending-over activity.I told Vijay photography is an expensive hobby when he asked me about DSLR in the previous post, but working out in the gym is not a hobby but something that will benefit you short and long term. Why not spend money for such ‘health investment’?

I have personally recommended few of my friends to join but the excuses that I get "expensive", "no time", "far la..lazy to travel" etc. But we don’t mind spending time travelling to shopping malls and clubs to meet people, and we have the time to eat 3 full meals a day isn’t it? Between, I use to for evening jog in a nearby park and I only see Indians when they come to date there. No one is going to charge any fees to jog in a public park but I don’t see our people doing it. So, clearly money is not the issue here.

The prevalence of obesity and chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus is record high among our people. Why is that so? Besides diet, being sedentary is one of the major factor. If one do not take care of himself when he is in 20s and 30s, then I would say he is already getting himself prepared for one or more illness when he reach mid-40s!

So, I am asking my friends again - Who are going to come to the gym with me next week?

We like our single pack Ammu. ;)

But the main reason I don’t prefer gyms or closed courts is because I feel cramped and feel as if the air is getting thinner the longer you stay.

I love my outdoor football, which is my main exercise anyway, and I just love the open air.

Gyms.. I feel I am breathing more of the sweat and aroma from the guy next to me.. ;)

Oh well, I can be paranoid sometimes..

and how dare u question about our religious matters. there is no 6 pack samiyar ok. ISA…saya mahu ISA. cepat. mana boleh you cakap pasal agama saya.

diabetes is our universal identity btw. if indians see kidneys drop of and run also theyre not afraid. :p

ok serious, rather than gym, if only we can encourage our kaigels to go back to the soccer fields, and badminton courts, its total exercise. we benefit more. :)

Actually nowdays there are lots of indians enrolled themselves in gym’s. I have seen alot of indians in gyms like Bkt Aman gym, Bfields, Kelana jaya etc. I guess the mentality is changing now where Indian guys would want to look good as well. Thanks to Surya and Vishal ahhahahh

End of the day its all about dicipline. I started working out sometime back and I stopped. Lazy larr what else.. then I realised that I may end up in a situation where I cant even see my own toe when I look down. Currently under strict diet and workout schedule.. tiring though…

I too want too look like Vishal.. i too want tooooooo heheheheh

    @ naga,

why u go so close to the guy next to you? ish! :-)

between, how often you go for your football activity? outdoor activity, while helping you to sweat, remains as a ‘recreational’ activity in my eyes.

don’t mistaken me.. I do love football (and footballers :-P)

    @ Raaja

got lot more other activities you can do wht? taichi, line dancing, aerobic, yoga.. just to name few. no need kayuh la..even i don’t. boring stuff!

gone were the days when you can actually find open green fields to play. think about our way of living now..8-5pm job, late nights out, fast foods, cramped terrace house/apartment.. weekends are filled with movies, more nights out, booze etc. how many actually sweat it out?

    @ murali

well.. u can keep yourself active by doing all that but when you want to lose some extra pounds and build muscle, gym is still the better option.

    @ rujj

i am so glad that (my) Vishal gave you aspiration.. :-D

maybe u r right about more Indian guys are adopting ‘gym-culture’ but when you compare it with other races, we are still lagging behind. Its even worse when we compare Indian girls with women from other races.

    btwn, all the best!

Well i didnt search yahoo regarding this topic and i found interesting fact based on a survey a independent website did.

    * 46 percent of Web site visitors say they don’t go to the gym because it’s too crowded
    * 21 percent say they don’t go because they don’t know what they’re doing
    * 19 percent feel they’ll be the only one who isn’t “buff” or already in good shape
    * 11 percent say rude gym etiquette keeps them from going (i.e., not wiping off a machine after a cardio workout or not letting others work in on a weight machine)
    * 3 percent said they’re afraid to ask questions

But for malaysians I think only 1 answer..

    “No Time Leh!”

    @amutha
as far as i know, going to gym is build muscles. building muscles will not make ur fat burn much..maybe a lil bit.

running(not jogging) is good option to build mucles and reducing weight and looking after ur makan is another thing.

  17. Muralidharan Gopal Says:

ops..wrongly typed there NOT good option to build muscles.
it should be good option to burn some fats

    @ Vijay

You got it right man!! :-)

    @ Naga

See, now that is what we call ‘MOTIVATION’!!

    @ Murali

u can manipulate the machines to suit your work out eg. cardio + lower weight but more repetition will burn fat instead of building muscle.

I think the Indians in the United States are either getting more health conscious, or utterly bored, or are trying hard to fit in for I do see them at the gym, especially the younger generation.
